How often do I need to restring my tennis racquet?
Think of your tennis string like a rubber band: over time it dries and stretches out. Similarly, tennis racquet string loses its elasticity and snapback the more you use it. That’s why it’s important to restring your tennis racquet often to keep your strings performing their best.
How often you need to restring will depend, in part, on how often you play tennis and the type of string you are using.
- Generally speaking, you should restring your tennis racquet at least quarterly.
- If you play tennis more than a few times a week, or hit with more power or spin, you will want to restring your racquet more often.
- The higher your level of play, the more often you’ll likely want to restring as you will notice decreases in string performance over time.
Top tip: Don’t wait for your strings to break before restringing. Restring as soon as you start noticing a decline in performance or when the strings become frayed.
How often do I need to regrip my tennis racquet?
Like tennis strings, racquet grips and overgrips need to be replaced regularly in order to maintain their performance. When your grip starts to wear thin or unravel, it’s harder for your hands to maintain the right placement on your racquet. This can lead to your racquet slipping in your hands both during and between shots.
As a general rule of thumb, we recommend regripping your racquet quarterly when you restring your racquet.
What type of racquet grip should I use?

How do I regrip a tennis racquet?
- The first step in regripping a tennis racquet is to remove the old grip. Unwrap it from the top, starting by the racquet throat.
- Next, you’ll want to remove the plastic backing from your new grip.
- Turn your racquet upside down so you’re holding the end of the racquet handle, begin with the tapered end of the new grip, and start wrapping the grip around your racquet handle from the butt cap to the racquet throat.
- Pull reasonably tightly on the grip to ensure a good wrap, overlapping each previous layer by about 25% as you go.
- Once you get to the top of the racquet handle, you can snip off any excess grip.
- Use the finishing tape to adhere the grip to the handle, then pull the rubber grip collar back down around the top of the handle.
How do I prevent my tennis racquet from slipping in my hands?
