Tennis Racket 101: Your Top Racket Questions Answered
From how often to restring a tennis racquet to how to regrip a tennis racket, we have answers to your top tennis racket questions.
How do I prevent my tennis racket from slipping in my hands?
If you feel your racket slipping in your hands upon contact, we highly recommend trying Velociti’s Grip-Enhancing Towel. A light squeeze of the Grip-Enhancing Towel in between games is all it takes to prevent grip-slip.
Simply squeeze the towel lightly between your hands, or squeeze the towel directly around your racquet handle, for a long-lasting grip with no sticky residue. You can re-squeeze the towel as often as needed.
We recommend re-applying more often when it's hot out (more hand sweat), when playing indoors (more air moisture), or when playing in a humid outdoor environment.
How often do I need to restring my tennis racket?
Think of your tennis string like a rubber band: over time it dries and stretches out. Similarly, tennis racket string loses its elasticity and snapback the more you use it. That’s why it’s important to restring your tennis racket often to keep your strings performing their best.
How often you need to restring will depend, in part, on how often you play tennis and the type of string you are using.
- Generally speaking, you should restring your tennis racket at least quarterly.
- If you play tennis more than a few times a week, or hit with more power or spin, you will want to restring your racket more often.
- The higher your level of play, the more often you’ll likely want to restring as you will notice decreases in string performance over time.
Top tip: Don’t wait for your strings to break before restringing. Restring as soon as you start noticing a decline in performance or when the strings become frayed.
How often do I need to regrip my tennis racket?
Like tennis strings, racket grips and overgrips need to be replaced regularly in order to maintain their performance. When your grip starts to wear thin or unravel, it’s harder for your hands to maintain the right placement on your racquet. This can lead to your racket slipping in your hands both during and between shots.
As a general rule of thumb, we recommend regripping your racket quarterly when you restring your racket.
What type of racket grip should I use?
The Velociti Replacement Grip is one of the best tennis grips available on the market thanks to its cushioned feel and sweat-absorbing textured holes. Players who want a slightly larger grip or tackier feel will also love our new Velociti Acceleration Overgrips. Most racket stringers are well experienced at regripping and will likely do it for you at no cost.
How do I regrip a tennis racket?
- The first step in regripping a tennis racket is to remove the old grip. Unwrap it from the top, starting by the racket throat.
- Next, you’ll want to remove the plastic backing from your new grip.
- Turn your racket upside down so you’re holding the end of the racket handle, begin with the tapered end of the new grip, and start wrapping the grip around your racket handle from the butt cap to the racket throat.
- Pull reasonably tightly on the grip to ensure a good wrap, overlapping each previous layer by about 25% as you go.
- Once you get to the top of the racket handle, you can snip off any excess grip.
- Use the finishing tape to adhere the grip to the handle, then pull the rubber grip collar back down around the top of the handle.
